On the Shelf

ontheshelfheaderOh she’s on the shelf

they snipe, these old,

gnarled women

with biting tongues

and sagging jowls

who never now

touch men’s thick

chests or

soothe the cheeks

of suitors.

They smirk

at one another

they are blessed

from marriages

that crumbled

and immobilized

their dreams.

She’s on the shelf,

they howl,

she’ll never marry now.
